Connecting to our US Windows Servers using VPN

Votes: 0

Our US Windows hosting requires customers to connect to a VPN to directly access SQL server or mySQL using remote management tools such as SQL server management studio.

There are two ways to make a VPN connection to our network.

Method 1 : Using a web browser. (Supports Windows XP, Linux or Mac) (32bit only)

Please first read about requirements for your particular operation system below

Windows users

  • Operating System: Windows 2000 or XP is required to run the VPN Client. Administrative privileges are required to install and use the VPN Client.
  • Browser: Internet Explorer is required (IE 6.0+ is recommended). The browser must allow signed ActiveX controls which are marked as safe and scriptable to be downloaded.

Sometimes the active-X component can have difficulties installing, if you have problems try the following in order to resolve it.

  1. Check your username and password.
  2. Restart your web browser
  3. Restart your PC

Linux Users

  • Operating Systems: RedHat, Fedora, SuSE are supported. Root privileges are required to install VPN client. Normal users can run VPN client and uninstall it.
  • JRE: The Java Runtime Environment must be installed on the client. JRE1.4 or later is required.
  • Browsers: Mozilla, Netscape or Firefox is required.

MacOS Users

  • Operating Systems: Mac OS 10.4 or later on both Intel and Power PC platforms are supported. Root privileges are required to install VPN client.
  • JRE: The Java Run-time Environment must be installed on the client. JRE1.5 or later is required.
  • Browser: Safari is required.

Browse to the address below using your operating systems compatible browser

https://vpn.dal01.softlayer.com

At the prompt enter the VPN username and password provided on your welcome letter. (If you did not receive a username and password or have lost it then please open a support ticket to be sent one).

If this is your first visit then the VPN application install procedure will be started (On subsequent visits it will be loaded from your local install cache). Follow the onscreen instructions.

All going well you should be connected to the VPN.

Method 2 : Using our VPN client application (Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7  / 32bit and 64bit)

Important note for use under 64bit Windows.

This application must be run in compatibility mode. once installed and before running, right click the shortcut icon and choose properties, select compatibility tab and choose Windows XP (Service pack 3). The application should then run fine (Tested under Windows 7 pro 64bit). Please note that this software also seems to produce a number of false/positives in some anti-virus software such as Comodo.

Please download the following VPN client by clicking here. Once downloaded unzip and then run the setup.exe file to install it.

To connect to the VPN open the client program (VpnApp Connect) and create a new profile with the following details

Name : ServWise
Host : vpn.dal01.softlayer.com
Username : provided in welcome letter.
You may also choose to save the password here also.

Click connect to be connected to our VPN where you will now be able to connect to VPN specific IP 's using remote management tools.

If you did not receive a username and password or have lost it then please open a support ticket to be sent one.

Tip: read the help documentation that comes with the application, a connection to the VPN can be automated using a dos batch file which may be more convenient for some.
