How do I alias or redirect one domain to another?

Many times it is required to have multiple domains pointing at one website and depending on your requirements you may wish to achieve this in two ways.

First option: Domain Redirect (Recommended)

A redirect is where one domain is redirected to another, so for example, if I enter www.secondarydomain.com in my browser it will change to www.primarydomain.com. "Hence the term Redirect".

Typically if you are doing a redirect then you will want to do what is called a "301" redirect, or a "Permanent" redirect. This does not mean it can't be undone, it simply tells search engines that they should consider that this redirect is unlikely to change soon and so they should prioritise the primary domain and ignore the secondary domain.

Second Option: Domain Alias Or parked domain

An aliased domain is where one domain "mirrors" another domain, so for example if I enter www.seconddomain.com I will see the same website as www.firstdomain.com but the domain will not change in the browser.

This can sometimes be useful but you should consider the impact this might have on SEO and possible duplicate content issues which may mean one or the other domain might not be indexed for the duplicated content and so may not gain any search engine ranking for that content.

How do I set up a domain redirect with ServWise (This assumes the primary domain is already set up)

  • On Windows (Control Panel: SolidCP or WebSitePanel)
Add the secondary domain to your domains list and check the tick box to create a website for it.
Browse to the website properties page and set the site as a "Redirection to URL", enter the primary domain as the target and check the tick box for "A permanent redirection to this resource" which sets it as a 301 redirect.

  • On Linux (Control Panel: cPanel)
From the domains section, add the secondary domain as a parked or alias domain and then from the redirects page choose this domain from the domains list and enter the primary domain you want to redirect too.
